Coleman SBA Small Business Loan Data

Do you know how many SBA 7(a) and 504 loans have been approved since 1984?

We do.

1,358,930.

Want to know more about each loan?

We have it all. We start with the date of the loan. And the amount.

We have the name of the borrower, the borrower's address -- even and the phone number.

Whether it's a 7(a) or 504 loan -- even the type of 7(a) loan; PLP, CLP, SBAExpress, Community Express, Patriot Express, Gulf Opportunity Loan, Rural Lender Advantage.

Want to know the name of the lender? No problem. You even get the lender's address.

And the most important piece of data--when the loan was paid off or charged off (including the amount)-- or if it is still on the lender's books. (Paid-in-full and charge-off data is updated through February 29, 2012)

There's more -- the NAICS code and industry description, franchise code and name, whether the loan is to a start up or existing business, the number of employees, the number of jobs created and the number of jobs retained.

What You Can do with the Data

Since you can't have 1.3 million rows on data in a spreadsheet, we have converted the data base to a spread sheet with a tab for each year.

This allows you to easily slice and dice the data any way you want. Here are some actual case studies of what others have done with the data;

A national lender uses the data to evaluate SBA loan penetration in markets throughout the country. This allows them to identify under utilized, as well as saturated markets.

One community bank uses the data to profile its competitors' loans. They plug in the zip codes of their foot print and they can get an accurate assessment of their, and their competitors' market penetration. Also, based on industry codes and dollar amount it can help you analyze your competitors' credit boxes.

Another lender uses the data to vet potential BDO hires by verifying a lender's activity in specific geographic areas.

One lender takes a market, analyzes larger 7(a) loans, assumes they are real estate loans, and compares that production to the amount of SBA 504 loans. This gives the lender the knowledge of whether a market is predominately 7(a) or 504.

One community bank did an analysis of the performance of a specific franchise in their footprint, e.g. Subway or Quiznos to aid them to determine what their lending attitude should be toward the franchise.

And, of course, many lenders use the list to solicit new business by targeting borrowers currently in the data base.

About the Data

The data is obtained from the U.S. Small Business Administration. It includes all SBA 7(a) and 504 loans approved between January 1, 1984 through September 30, 2011.

We receive the data in a Microsoft Access data base file. We convert this file to a manageable Excel spread sheet, with a separate tab for each year.

The data is emailed to you.

Or, if you choose, you may receive the data on a CD, at no additional charge.
